About Alligator Gar
An alligator gar is a fresh water fish that has a mouth that resembles that of an alligator. The weight of this fish varies from 70- 180 kg. It has a long mouth and a row of sharp teeth on the upper jaw that are suitable for tearing flesh. The fish is mostly found in shallow and motionless water. It is also popularly found under weeds in water. This fish measures to a length of 10 feet. This fish is carnivorous.
The big size of the alligator gar makes many people think of it as a jeopardous. Nonetheless, this fish will only kill the small fish it eats without bothering the rest of the big animals including humans. There are bluff tales that have been developed claiming about how this fish is dangerous and the men that it has ever ripped into pieces.
AG has a body that is rough and hard. It is covered with protruding scales that are shaped like the diamonds. However, other than this outer rough skin, the interior body is well fattened and softened. Professional fishermen use the ordinary bow and arrow to kill this fish. The head is flat and the skin color mostly passes a bluish color.
Gar naturally resides in fresh water. These fish breeds are the largest kinds in US. They are common in the southern side of the country. The average weight of an adult fish is 200 pounds. There is however one that has never been exceeded that was killed by an archer in a water basin in Colarado. This fish weighed 360 pounds.
AGs are popular sources of meat since they give large amounts of meat. Common hunting equipment used are hooks and nets. Those using hooks are supposed to have hooks that are attached to strong chains that have capability to repel the force that the fish do retaliate with. There are other fishermen who use bows and arrows. Once this fish is caught and brought to the surface, it is advisable to kill it first. This ensures that it will not suffer or cause injury to anyone since it takes 2 hours out of water before it can suffocate.
This fish is edible and many hotels in Southern US do give the meat of these fish as an alternative in the menu.
